Slain Brown Student's Funeral Service Monday

The 19-year-old Sophomore was one of two students killed in Saturday's mass shooting.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Ella Cook, one of the two students slain in Saturday's Brown University mass shooting, will be laid to rest in her home state of Alabama.

Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore, was killed along with freshman MukhammadAziz Umurzokov in the shooting inside the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building. At least eight others were injured and hospitalized.

Two have since been released from the hospital, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said Wednesday.

Of the six remaining hospitalized, one is in critical condition but stable, Smiley said, and the other five are stable.

Cook was concentrating in French and Mathematics-Economics, according to her obituary.

"Before college, she graduated from Mountain Brook High School in Mountain Brook, Alabama," the obituary said. "Ella was an active, lifelong member of Cathedral Church of the Advent (Episcopal) in Birmingham."

Cook was also an accomplished "competitive pianist," Brown University President Christina H. Paxson said in a letter posted to the school's website.

"She was known for her compassionate, loyal and courageous spirit, and we understand she was described by a church leader as a 'tremendous bright light' who brought peace and faith to all those around her," Paxson said in the letter. "At Brown, Ella was actively involved in student life, served as vice president of the Republican Club of Brown University and was a beloved member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. As I learn more about the vitality she radiated, I wish so much that I had the opportunity to know her."

Cook was find of children, according to her obituary.

"Ella was known for her wide array of interests, from being with her precious friends, to babysitting so many children who were special to her, to teaching young people in Bible studies, Sunday School, and academic subjects," the obituary said. "Ella dearly loved children. In fact, she believed her highest calling would one day be to have children of her own."

Cook's funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at the Cathedral Church of the Advent.

"Friends are cordially invited to the visitation immediately following the service," the obituary said. "Burial will be held privately for the family. We invite everyone to wear Easter colors."
