BRISTOL, R.I. ā Elizabeth Dufraneās journey through college has been anything but typical, but at Roger Williams University she found a home where she could finish what she started. Between early morning basketball practices, classes, and her commitment to Reserve Officersā Training Corps (ROTC), she built a path defined by discipline, leadership, and growth ā with RWU providing the foundation that allowed her to thrive and soar like a Hawk.
Dufrane, a senior Business Management major and Military Science minor from Falls Church, V.A., transferred to RWU in 2023 after spending time at Drexel University and the University of Mary Washington. Though she entered RWU later than most, her impact has been immediate and wide ranging.

āRoger Williams gave me space to grow,ā Dufrane said. āIt helped me figure out who I want to be ā not just as a student or athlete, but as a leader and a person.ā
While at Mary Washington, Dufrane played against RWU in the 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament. Though Dufrane already knew she was transferring, the matchup gave her a glimpse into the future with a team culture that resonated with her.
āPlaying against Roger Williams was eye-opening,ā she said. āI saw how the team communicated, how the coaches listened. It felt like the kind of environment I wanted to be a part of.ā
Dufrane said adjusting to a new academic system brought some challenges, but she never felt like she was navigating it alone.
āIāve taken the same class three times at three different schools,ā she said with a laugh. āBut the faculty and advisors here helped me build a plan. Iāve had a lot of support.ā
Now on track to graduate this summer, Dufrane hopes to continue at RWU in the MBA 4+1 program. She said staying at a university that already understands her goals just makes sense.
On the court, Dufrane has emerged as a key contributor, leading the Womenās Basketball team in minutes played, assists, blocks, and steals. She averaged 12.3 points per game and was named to the Conference of New England All-Conference Second Team for her performance.
āSheās one of the most disciplined and selfless players Iāve ever coached,ā said Kelly Thompson, Head Coach of Womenās Basketball. āHer work ethic and leadership have elevated everyone around her.ā That same drive and leadership extend far beyond the court. Dufrane is known for her relentless work ethic and ability to stay composed under pressure, qualities that have earned her respect in every corner of campus life. Her commitment to excellence shows up in everything she takes on.
Off the court, Dufrane serves as a contracted cadet in RWUās Army ROTC program. She is set to commission as second lieutenant after graduation. Dufrane also participated in the ROTCās Ranger Challenge, a team-based competition that includes 10 physically and mentally demanding events. Dufrane represented her team in eight of the 10 events, including the burden run, tactical combat casualty care, functional fitness, one-rope bridge, grenades, weapons assembly, crucible event, and the 5-mile run.
āROTC has helped me grow in a different way,ā Dufrane said. āItās taught me how to stay calm under pressure and be accountable to something bigger than myself.ā
Balancing athletics, ROTC, and a full academic load means Dufraneās days often begin early and end late, but she has maintained a 3.6 GPA while pursuing each of her commitments with determination and passion.
āIt's definitely a sacrifice,ā she said. āBut I care deeply about everything Iām involved in. And here, Iāve been surrounded by professors, coaches, and teammates who really want me to succeed.ā
Though she has only been at RWU for two years, her presence is felt across campus and within her team.
āSheās going to leave a legacy,ā Thompson said. āNot just because of her stats, but because of the way she carries herself. She's shown our program what it looks like to lead with purpose.ā
With graduation approaching, Dufrane is preparing for her next chapter in the U.S. Army while also looking ahead to continued academic opportunities at Roger Williams University. Reflecting on how far she's come, she credits the university for helping her bring all the pieces of her college experience together.
āI came here looking for a team,ā Dufrane said. āWhat I found was a community that helped me become my best self. I'm proud of what I've done here, and I know I couldn't have done it without Roger Williams University.ā
