10-DUI Weekend Includes Wrong-Way I-95 Slowpoke with .281 BAC
Rhode Island State Police troopers had a busy weekend, arresting 10 including a wrong way driver and a driver who rammed into a tow truck.
CRANSTON, RI—Rhode Island state troopers arrested 10 people for driving drunk this past weekend, including two drivers who flirted with death but were spared thanks to the actions of police and firefighters.
One driver, identified as Juan Delgado Roman, 46, of 27 Diamond St., Apt. 2, Providence, was seen driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 at about 25 mph early Sunday morning, police said.
Police got a flurry of 911 phone calls reporting a wrong-way driver heading south in the northbound lanes at around 1:45 a.m. Troopers driving south soon saw Roman on the other side of the highway traveling south. They alerted troopers on the other side of the highway who “utilized their cruiser to force the vehicle towards the center concrete barrier and to a stop under the Route 10 overpass in the City of Cranston,” said State Police Superintendent Steven G. O’Donnell in a news release.
Roman showed signs of intoxication at the scene and was arrested. He later registered blood alcohol readings of .265 and .281 in two preliminary breath tests administered by police—more than three times the legal limit of .08.
O’Donnell said that the state police will “continue to aggressively enforce the motor vehicle laws with increased emphasis on speeding, driving while impaired, aggressive driving, texting violations, seat belt and child violations.”
The goal, the colonel said, is that “by continuing these enforcement efforts, it makes the highways safer for all travelers.”
Also arrested were:
Jennifer McCoy, 29, of 7 Gareau St., West Wawick, charged with driving under the influence and refusing a chemical test.
James Kirschner, 25, of 148 Dunns Corner Road, Westerly, charges with DUI. Police said he registered .225 and .229 blood alcohol readings in preliminary breath tests.
