ASFMS Hosts 2013 Athletic Awards Night
Athletes from the school's Boys' and Girls' Soccer and Basketball teams, along with Wrestling, Cheerleading, Baseball and Softball were recognized for their hard work and dedication during their respective season.
Â
On Thursday, May 30, parents, coaches and athletes from Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School gathered in the school's auditorium to celebrate the ASFMS 2012-2013 Athletic Night.Â
Before athletic awards were presented, guests viewed a video montage featuring photos of athletes at team practices and games throughout the 2012-2013 school year. In addition, every team was featured in their own slideshow which highlighted all aspects of the season, from practice, gameplay, and travel to away games, as well as the occasional candid shot of teammates hanging out and spending quality time together.

Following the presentation of awards to members of the school's eight teams, Boys' Basketball coach Dennis McGovern and Girls' Soccer coach Alicia Simas announced the 2013 Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School Male and Female Athlete of the Year. To be considered for the award, an athlete must be in the eighth grade and have been a member on a school team in at least two of the three seasons. They must also exhibit leadership, commitment, loyalty, ambassadorship, sportsmanship, teamwork, coachability and academic excellence.
"I just want to preface this by saying that the decision of the coaches to select just one athlete was very difficult," said McGovern. "We spent several afternoons going over each candidate, and we feel that we came up with the best possible choices."

Male Athlete of the Year: Nick D'Ambra, a member of both the Boys' Basketball and Boys' Baseball teams, was praised for being "an impact player on both teams for the last three years at ASFMS, who combines skilled athleticism with skill and love for the games he plays".
"On the field, he is a leader by example, always displaying humility and a willingness to learn and improve," said McGovern. "He is one of the most coachable players that we have had the privilege of working with and we've had the pleasure to watch him grow and develop into the player he is today."
Female Athlete of the Year: Hannah McGuirk, a member of the Girls' Soccer, Basketball and Softball teams, was lauded for being "not only an exceptional athlete, but a model student and individual".
"She has recorded countless volunteer hours and consistently puts others before herself," said Simas. "She is a leader in every way. In practice, in games, on the bus, in the classroom and amongst the entire Coventry community. Her drive to achieve her personal best and push others to do the same is unmatched by any athlete I've ever coached. On a personal note, I am honored to have coached this young woman who has made a lasting impression - one I will never forget."
