Coventry Man Killed Tuesday While Crossing West Greenwich Road

A 25-year-old Coventry man was killed last Tuesday while crossing the road, West Greenwich police said.

COVENTRY, RI — Daniel Cornell, 25, of Coventry, died at Rhode Island Hospital last Tuesday after being struck by a Jeep on Route 102, West Greenwich police confirmed. The investigation is not yet complete, West Greenwich police Chief Craig Barone said. But the preliminary information indicates weather and darkness contributed to the accident. The driver, who was not identified, is not being charged, he said.

She stopped and cooperated with police, he said, and officers found "zero" signs of any reckless or impaired driving.

The crash happened on Dec. 5 at 4:40 p.m. on Route 102 (Victory Highway), just north of the Travel Center of America truck stop and across from Centreville Bank. Witnesses said the Jeep was driving South, and Cornell and another pedestrian were walking south on the north side of the highway. They tried to cross the road and were struck, police were told. It was raining and windy, Chief Barone said. The sun had just gone down, and witnesses said the men were wearing dark clothing.
