Man who Crashed into House Charged with DUI, Reckless Driving

Police said they got a call that a highly intoxicated man had left a local bar right before the crash.

COVENTRY, RI—A 30-year-old Warwick man is facing a slew of charges for crashing into a telephone pole and plowing into a Main Street house early Tuesday morning.

Coventry Police Col. John MacDonald said in a news release that Allen Hanson, of 35 Reed St., Warwick, is being charged with reckless driving and eluding police, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license in addition to citations for speeding and leaving the lane of travel.

Police were responding to Olde Theater Diner on Sandy Bottom Road for a report of a disturbance on a report of a highly intoxicated man who left the scene in a grey Chevy Impala.

As police were checking the area, Hanson reportedly was seen driving east on Main Street at a high rate of speed, passing four officers that were heading in the opposite direction.

He “disappeared around the corner near the scene of the accident. When patrols turned around and caught up to the vehicle they observed that it had struck the house at 1134 Main street as well as a telephone pole,” MacDonald said.

Officers tried to get at Hanson but live wires were touching the car. Hanson reportedly was not responsive and didn’t move for about 10 minutes as fire and rescue crews responded and National Grid was contacted was make sure the wires weren’t active.

Hanson was eventually removed from the vehicle and transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Police followed along and charged him with the aforementioned offenses.

Hanson will be arraigned at a later date.
