Police say scammers have called victims, impersonating a lawyer representing a grandchild who has been arrested, to request money for fines.
CRANSTON, RI — The Cranston Police Department has issued a warning to residents about phone scammers targeting elderly residents.
According to police, scammers have called victims, impersonating a lawyer representing a grandchild who has been arrested, to request money for fines.
"The Cranston Police Department will never request payment over the phone, ask for Bitcoin, any other electronic funds transfer methods, or cash payments for any fines," Cranston police said in a Facebook post.

Anyone who receives a "grandparent scam" call should hang up immediately and call Cranston police at 401-942-2211. Never provide personal or financial information over the phone.
