RHODE ISLAND — An unexpected winter storm passed over southern New England Sunday, dropping nearly a foot of snow in parts of the state. The final totals were far more than initially expected — first a dusting, then about six inches at most.

Greenville had the highest accumulation at 10.8 inches. Even Little Compton, which saw some of the least snow in the state, was close to the originally expected max at 4.2 inches.

The snow, which started early Sunday, tapered off early Monday morning. Many communities opted for delayed starts to school, distance learning days or delayed trash pickup.
