Onions Sold In RI Included In Widespread Salmonella Recall

The red, white and yellow onions come from Mexico and were distributed to several states, including Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Onions sold in Rhode Island are part of a widespread recall linked to potential Salmonella contamination. The onions, sold by ProSource Produce, include red, white and yellow varieties.

The affected produce comes from Chihuahua, Mexico, shipped between July 1 and Aug. 1 to several states, including Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The onion were distributed widely, to wholesalers, broadline foodservice customers and retail stores in 50, 25, 10, 5, 3 and 2-pound bags, as well as 50, 40, 25, 10 and 5-pound cartons. They were sold under the brand names Big Bull, Peak Fresh Produce, Sierra Madre, Markon First Crop., Markon Essentials, Rio Blue, ProSource, Rio Valley and Sysco Imperial, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious or fatal infecctions in children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy people who become infected often suffer from fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Anyone with the affected produce, or is not sure where their onions came from, should return them to the store or throw them away.
