RI Governor's Race: Fung In 'Dead Heat' With Raimondo

The Roger Williams University/WPRI-TV poll found the governor has a 2-percentage-point lead, which statistically is a dead heat.

CRANSTON, RI — If the election were held today and Gina Raimondo and Allan Fung were the candidates, the outcome would be — well, too close to call, according to a new poll by Roger Williams University and WPRI-TV. The latest poll shows Raimondo with a 2-percentage-point lead over Fung, according to RWU. Statistically, the school said, that's a dead heat. The poll's margin of error is 4.8 percent.

But the poll doesn't show the likely Primary results. Democrat Matt Brown is challenging Raimondo, and Fung also has Republican Party challengers.

"They are running against each other in a primary, so you would need a separate survey sample," according to RWU spokesman Edward Fitzpatrick.

Raimondo collected 39 percent; Fung got 37 percent; Independent Joe Trillo, a former Republican state rep, picked up six percent; and three other Independents (Ann Armstrong, William Gilbert and Dr. Luis-Daniel Muñoz) combined for three percent.

Fourteen percent say they're undecided.

“The governor’s race has not changed since February – it’s still a dead heat,” pollster Joseph Fleming said. Neither Raimondo nor Fung has broken 40 percent of the vote in the RWU/WPRI 12 polls, “but if the independent candidates draw 10 percent of the vote, they will only need 45 percent of the vote to win the race.”

In February, the poll gave Raimondo 38 percent and Fung 36 percent.

Both would fare better against other candidates. For example, Raimondo would get more than 40 percent of the vote if she faced off against Republicans Patricia Morgan or Giovanni Feroce, while Fung would do better against Democrat Matt Brown.
