Five+ Things: Life Post-Blizzard

Power Out? As of Saturday at 11 p.m., there were 836 customers still without power in East Greenwich. National Grid estimated power will be restored by Monday night. That’s a long time to be cold and dark. If you need help, there’s a warming shelter at Warwick Vets High School in Warwick, or, you can charge up and warm up at the Community Room at the police department. 

Shower & Power at the Y: The Kent County YMCA is offering free showers and battery charging to community members affected by the recent snowstorm and power outages, starting this morning – Kent County YMCA, 900 Centerville Road in Warwick, 401-828-0130. As of Saturday night, the West Bay Y, on Post Road in North Kingstown, was closed due to no power. A photo ID and signed waiver are required. Safety message from National Grid: The buildup of ice and snow around or over gas meters and vents for natural gas appliances could pose a serious safety risk. Ice and snow falling from a roof can damage gas meters or service connections to customers’ homes or businesses, resulting in a gas leak. Ice and snow blocking vents could cause carbon monoxide (CO) to back up into a building and result in carbon monoxide poisoning for those inside. To avoid these dangers, National Grid advises natural gas customers to closely inspect areas around and over gas meters, service hook-ups and vents for ice and snow that could damage equipment or prevent CO from properly venting. If you have concerns, call 800-640-1595.

Pasta Dinner: The EG Boy's Home Assoc. is holding its Annual Pasta Extravaganza fundraiser dinner. This is a buffet-style dinner with an assortment of pastas and homemade sauces, mac & cheese, local bread, salad, homemade desserts, and endless coffee and lemonade. Seconds are always on us! Tickets are available at the door for $10 per adult and $5 per child under 12 years old. All proceeds are used to maintain the Scout Hall on Spring Street. From 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Fireman's Hall.
