Cole Boys Soccer Team Captures State Championship
They beat Smithfield's previously unbeaten Gallagher Middle School 1-0 Monday.
The Cole Middle School Boys Soccer team beat the previously undefeated Gallagher Middle School, 1-0, in the state championship game Monday at Classical High School in Providence.Â
The Cole boys team finished off a strong run through the playoffs with solid defense led by eighth graders Andrew Golding and Dawson Leonard, and seventh graders Eamon Keenan, Donny Cassidy, and Sam Comito.
Midfielders Brendan Jordan, Bryce Ingram, Finn Osterhout, Ryan Perrett, and Noah Perry controlled the middle of the field against the larger Gallagher team, opening up opportunities for forwards Andrew Licciardi and Drew Younkin. The pressure brought by Cole's middies and forwards resulted in several corner kick opportunities. Eamon Keenan converted one of Brendan Jordan's corners with a beautiful header to the corner of the net late in the second half to bring home the state soccer title to Cole Middle School for the second time in the last three years. Â
Not only was Gallagher unbeaten this season coming into the final, but it had had only one goal scored on it.
The Cole team was coached by Dan Gloria. Team members included Cole Batista, RJ Bissonnette, Wyatt DePriest, Jean Baptiste Goriou, Joe Hedde, Harrison Leonard, Sam Lewin, Parsa Raissi, James Stitt, and Alfred Timperley.
