Driver Crashes Into Building, Runs Off, Caught Covered In White Powder: Cops

The white, powdery substance was believed to be fentanyl, police said.

EAST GREENWICH, RI — A driver crashed into an East Greenwich building, then ran off but was caught covered in a white, powdery substance believed to be fentanyl, police said.

The driver, 44-year-old David Hickey of East Greenwich, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a chemical test, obstruction, and duty to stop in an accident resulting in injury in connection with the Wednesday night incident on Division Street near South County Trail, the East Greenwich Police Department said in a media release.

Officers were called out to the crash shortly after 7:30 p.m. and learned the driver and a passenger had run off, the release said.

A second passenger was found unconscious and taken to a hospital, according to the release.

Police employed a drone and Rhode Island State Police Dog to search for the fugitives and found both, with Hickey covered in white powder, the release said.

The police dog was "exposed" to the powder and was administered Narcan, according to the release.

"All involved parties were transported to the hospital for evaluation," the release said.
