EGHS Custodian Loses Her Head ... Of Hair

Cheryl Alves and her husband both got their heads shaved to raise money for children with cancer.

Cheryl Alves has learned a lot during her brief stint with no hair. It's cooler, for one thing (or colder, depending the weather). But the main takeaway for her? Strangers are a lot kinder to her because they think she has cancer.

That's gotten her thinking. "People should treat everybody like that all the time!" she said.

Alves, and her husband, Mark, both went temporarily bald, but not because either of them has cancer. Rather, they wanted to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which benefits children with cancer.

Alves, at custodian at East Greenwich High School, reached out to the EGHS community and was happily amazed when she raised $866 from her EGHS contacts alone. In total, Alves raised $956.

The Avenger Booster Club donated $300, and Alves got donations from the high school PTG, Student Council, teachers and other staff.

"That was a lot of money," she said. "Thank you to everyone at the high school!"

Before she had her head shaved, Alves donated her hair to Locks of Love. It's been a little weird getting used to her lighter load.

"I do look in the mirror sometimes and go, 'Oh!'"
