EGHS Senior, Her 'Team' Assemble 5,000 Meals For Local Food Pantries

Forty people, lots of foodstuffs, and one hard-working EGHS senior put together 5,000 meals ready for distribution to local food pantries earlier this month.

Senior Rebecca Nunez raised more than $1,500 to buy the items needed for the meals, using the Kids Care model. 

Founded in 2004, Kids Care has been helping communities, schools, places of worship, businesses and service organizations around the country to package nutritious meals, all fortified with soy protein, nutrients and vitamins. Food packages include ingredient-labeling and cooking instructions and are heat sealed to ensure freshness. 

When it came time to put Rebecca's meals together, more than 30 volunteers showed up at the cafeteria to package the meals in a well-oiled assembly line. The group included children as young as 5, EGHS teachers and students, and local families, all willing to pitch in to help end hunger. In just two hours, the group packaged 5,000 meals.         

Now Rebecca is looking for the best places to give the meal to. “I hope local Patch readers can help me determine where this food will do the most good,” she said. 

She said she was grateful to the following organizations for their support: Mattioli Orthodontics, Hair Plus, Erina’s, The Lock Shop, The Tux Shoppe, Royalty Tailoring, Ferocious Eyes, Smiley Eybrow Treading, Hair Mates, Felicia's, Bridge Technical Solutions, and the Greenwich Bay Woman’s Club.·
