Five+ Things: Asteroid Near Miss, Teen Center

Blood Drive: The bloodmobile will be outside of 6 Division Street today for a drive sponsored by AFSCME Local 1293. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The R.I. Blood Center lost nearly 600 donations during last week’s blizzard.

Teen Center: The Teen Center has provided a great place to hang out on Friday evenings for decades now. They meet at the gym at Eldredge School but you don’t have to play basketball to enjoy the camraderie. From 6 to 8 p.m.

Flyby: The good news is Near Earth Asteroid 2012 DA14 will not smack our planet today. But it will come inside the Earth's ring of geosynchronous sattellites, NASA reports, making its closest approach at 17:26 UTC, or 12:26 noon Eastern Standard time. Its size is thought to be about 45 meters in diameter. It will appear slightly fainter than the naked eye can detect, so you'll have to take NASA's word for it. Unless their math is wrong.

Water Street closed: Water Street at the Barbara Tuft's Playground (Lion Street) will be closed 24 hours a day for approximately 5 weeks. No traffic will be able to pass because of the vertical trench sheeting that will be in the road. This construction is to replace the 90-year-old sewer main from the bottom of King Street to the Waste Water Treatment Facility. ‘Station’ book signing: Barnes & Noble Warwick is pleased to host Marlilyn Bellermore for a book signing for her book, The Night the Music Ended. This book is presented in the memory of The Station Nightclub and its victims. The book focuses on the music, interviews with the very bands that attracted so many devoted fans to this popular club.  Quiet Riot, The Dave Davies Band, Warrant, The Fixx and many more.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Station Fire Memorial Foundation.

‘Sinatra’ at the Odeum: Chris Jason and The Sinatra Live Big Band will perform one of Frank Sinatra’s most famous concerts –  "Sinatra At The Sands" in 1966 – at the newly reopened Greenwich Odeum theater. Jason is considered to be one of the most accurate interpreters of Frank around, performing over 200 per years, both solo and with The Sinatra Live Big Band. He was one of the performers at the Odeum’s reopening gala Jan. 30. Tickets, $27.50 in advance, $30 at the door, are on sale at www.theodeum.org and 401-885-4000.
