Five Things: Council Meeting, Community Meal

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Jan. 28.

Town Council meeting CANCELLED: Update: Because of bad weather, the tonight's meeting has been cancelled. Items on the agenda include an application by the Silver Spoon Bakery for a liquor license, a tax appeal settlement for Bostitch, and drafted legislation for merging the EG Fire District with the town.

Christ Community Kitchen dinner: Once a month, Christ Community Kitchen takes place at St. Luke's Church (usually, but not always, the last Monday of the month). It's a community meal open to anyone interested in good food and fellowship. No religious affiliation is required. St. Luke's and EG United Methodist Church share in the cooking and serving duties, typically rotating every other month, but others, including Boy Scouts, have participated. The meal is free, but donations are accepted.

Parks & Rec February Vacation Sign Ups: Registration begins by mail begins today for the EG Parks and Recreation Department's February Vacation programs. Four full days of trips and activities for area children, in grades 1-6, will be offered. Children may either sign up for a whole day of activities or simply a trip or a project. Flyers and registration forms were passed out at the local elementary schools and are available at the office, the Town Hall, the Library, or on the web at  www.eastgreenwichri.com. Trips include Biomes Marine Biology Center, Monster Mini Golf, Adventures in Space, Kingstown Bowl, ice skating, Aim High Academy, Roger Williams Park Zoo, Narragansett Ocean Club. Contact the office for more information at 886-8626-ext. 1.

Outdoor Ice Skating: I stopped by the Parks & Rec rink at Eldredge yesterday and there were several skaters enjoying the ice. There’s another man-made rink at Shovlin Park.

On Tuesday …

School Committee Budget Session: This is the first of five budget work sessions that will take place over the next few weeks. The focus of this meeting will be the elementary and secondary school budgets. It takes place in the library at Cole Middle School at 6:30 p.m.
