Five Things: May Breakfasts, May Fair, Arts on Main

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, May 4.


First Baptist’s Annual May Breakfast: Time to celebrate May with a community breakfast at the First Baptist Church of EG, which has been serving a May Breakfast for decades and decades. Eggs, delectable home fries by Chef Kathy, bacon, ham, beans, muffins, cold juice, hot coffee, and pies, pies, pies of every kind. From 6:30 to 10 a.m., $7 per person, $5 for children. Children under 5 are free. All are welcome to enjoy this piece of EG tradition.

Arts on Main: Arts on Main sidewalk art contest takes place Saturday from 
12 to ­3 p.m. with a rain date of Saturday, May 11. The event will kick off at the East Greenwich Town Hall and drawing will take place on Courthouse Lane and Pierce Street. Prizes for the best drawings will be awarded for each category and all pre-registered participants will receive an exclusive Arts on Main t-shirt. If you are not an artist, come enjoy the day and vote for your favorite drawing in the People’s Choice Award!

Yard and other special sales: 100 Fox Run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nautical Yard Sale at NK Town Beach, 15 Beach St., from 8 a.m. to noon, to benefit the NKHS Sailing team. Costume jewelry sale, 60 Quaid Lane, Warwick, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ‘Mom’s the Word’ Marketplace, unique and special gifts.

Ghost Notes: EG-based rock group The Ghostnotes was to have performed a benefit show tonight but an injury has sidelined one of the musicians so they have instead turned the event into an night of open-styled jamming integrated with a drum circle. Now, all attendees will be allowed to come up on stage with The Ghostnotes and be part of the music. There is no more admission but freewill donations will benefit the St. Luke’s youth choir program. In the auditorium at St. Luke’s Church. All are welcome.

'Hey Nineteen' SOLD OUT: The locally based Steely Dan tribute band Hey Nineteen's concert at the Greenwich Odeum is sold out. Band members said their next show is in June at the Newport Casino, and there will be more concerts. Congrats guys!

Avenger Home Action: Boys Varsity Baseball against Bishop Hendricken at 10 a.m. and Girls Varsity Lacrosse against Moses Brown at 3:30 p.m. You can follow all the Avenger action at the EG Booster Club website here.

On Sunday …

May Fair: If you have young children, you don’t want to miss this wonderful annual spring event. There are fun games, pony rides, a cake walk, a silent auction, play spaces, and a bunny-petting area. The theme this year is “Once Upon A Time … “ Admission is free; tickets are 50 cents a piece. The proceeds benefit the Barbara Tufts Cooperative Preschool. At Academy Field (and Swift Community Center), rain or shine, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Best Buddies Walk: Best Buddies pairs intellectually disabled middle and high schoolers with their typically developing peers. Once a year, the Rhode Island chapter holds a walk to raise money for programs and awareness of its mission. At Garden City. For more information, click here.

Lobster Roll time: Every spring, Westminster Unitarian Church goes into lobster mode, making hundreds of lobster rolls. The 22nd Annual Lobster Roll Day is next Friday, May 17, but NOW is the time to place your order. For $9.50, you get succulent lobster mixed with a little mayo, presented on a buttered roll, with a side of potato chips. As always, there are no fillers. Order 6+ rolls and get free delivery in East and West Greenwich, Warwick, Cranston, North and South Kingstown, Coventry, West Warwick, Exeter and Narragansett. There is a $5 delivery charge outside the free delivery area. Orders may also be picked up by 12:30 p.m. at Westminster. Orders of fewer than 6 rolls are pick-up only. Library Book Sale volunteers needed: The Friends of the EG Library are holding their annual book sale on Saturday, May 11, and they could use some help sorting, stacking, selling.
