Rabid Raccoon Killed In East Greenwich: Police

The rabid raccoon was on the front steps of a Tamarack Drive residence, police said.

EAST GREENWICH, RI β€” A rabid raccoon spotted on the front steps of a Tamarack Drive residence was killed Thursday, police said.

A police officer was sent to assist an East Greenwich animal control officer with the rabid raccoon shortly before 3:45 p.m., according to a police report.

Upon arrival, I observed the raccoon on the front steps of (the Tamarack Drive residence) where it was clear the raccoon was rabid," an officer said in the report.

The animal control officer "also confirmed the raccoon was sick as the raccoon was having trouble standing up," the report said.

The animal control officer "secured the raccoon to move it to a safe location in the yard," according to the report, and the police officer shot it four times.

"The raccoon subsequently became deceased," the report said.
