Town Tax Sale Takes Place Today

Notices have been sent out and advertisements purchased in an effort to goad property owners to pay their outstanding property taxes or sewer assessment. Today the town gets serious: all properties in which taxes or assessments have not been paid through at least Dec. 1, 2012, will be sold at public auction.

The auction takes place in Council Chambers at Town Hall at 1 p.m. As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, there were 14 parcels on the sale list for unpaid property taxes and 3 parcels for unpaid sewer assessments. 

According to town Tax Assessor Janice Peixinho, winning bidders must pay off the back taxes or assessments in return for a lien on the property. Property owners have a year and one day to pay off their debt to the town, thereby clearing the property of the lien. If nothing is paid off after that time, the lien-holder can then foreclose on the property. 

Only cash, certified check or money order will be accepted.
