Unified Volleyball Earns State Crown
The win caps a perfect season and follows a national championship last May.
Unified sports are relatively new on the scene, but the EGHS Unified Volleyball team has already got two feathers in its cap, with a national championship last spring and now a state championship.Â
The Avengers defeated Chariho 25-19, 25-12, in the state final on Nov. 3 at Portsmouth High School, capping a perfect season.Â
The team, undefeated during the regular season with a record of 7-0, had to get past the formidable Bishop Hendricken in the semi-final round. They continued their winning streak in straight sets against Hendricken, 31-29 and 25-22. By beating Chariho, they finished the season with a 9-0 record.

"The team did very well this year because of the style of play that we go by. That style is playing unified. That's when everyone on the court gets the ball. It doesn't matter if we're up by 15 or down by 15, everyone gets the ball," said senior Mike Carne. "I also think the teamwork, the good sportsmanship, the bonding, and comfort level of the team also made a difference in this year's season. It takes hard work and dedication to win like we did this year."
They were led by Head Coach Patty Carosotto and Assistant Coach Dave Egan.
