EAST GREENWICH, RI β€” A woman who paid for "services" at an East Greenwich Massage Envy with phony $100 bills didn't realize the cash was counterfeit, police said.

"The individual was found to be credible and did not realize the bills were counterfeit," East Greenwich Detective Lt. Tyler Lufkin said in an email. "Massage Envy has been paid for their services and the bills have been confiscated."

A Massage Envy manager alerted the law to the counterfeit money Sept. 3, telling an officer a customer paid with a pair of $100 bills.

The bills "appeared to be the same size and color as legitimate U.S. currency; however, the back of each contained a marking reading 'COPY,'" according to an East Greenwich police report.

Surveillance video showed the customer in question, identified as a 53-year-old woman, "removing two bills from her purse and handing them to the employee," the report said.

"The employee placed the bills near the register and returned $70 in change to (the woman who) then placed the $70 into an envelope, sealed it, and gave it back to the massage therapist as a tip," according to the report.

"Later that evening, another employee ... discovered the bills were counterfeit," the report said. "Following this discovery, (the manager) reviewed the surveillance footage and point-of-sale ... records. She confirmed that there had only been one transaction on (Sept. 2) involving $100 bills, which matched the video footage."

The manager informed the officer she wanted to pursue criminal charges on behalf of Massage Envy, the report said.
