Background Checks for Volunteers on E.P. School Board's Agenda
Criminal-background checks for school volunteers who make regular, unmonitored contact with students is now the law in Rhode Island.

New Rhode Island legislation that calls for criminal-background checks on certain school volunteers is on the agenda for tonight’s East Providence School Committee meeting.
The board meets at 7 pm in the Council Chamber in City Hall after a 30-minute executive session.
School Committee Chairman Joel Monteiro said the new background check law was put on the agenda to bring everyone up to speed on what will be required of volunteers.

The new law expands the scope of the background-check requirement to include volunteers who have direct, unmonitored and regular contact with students. Monteiro said he was approached recently by a PTO volunteer with a number of questions about the new law and its impact on PTOs.
"What activities require that volunteers have a BCI?" Monteiro said. "And what is the process for getting a background check? We'll deal with these issues."
