DUI Crash on 195 Sends EP Officer to Hospital: Police

Police said Jessica Kozlowski, 26, was drunk when she crashed into an East Providence cruiser stopped on the highway for an earlier crash.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI—A 26-year-old Rehoboth, MA, woman was charged for drunk driving after she crashed into a police cruiser on Interstate 195 early Friday morning, sending an officer to the hospital, police said.

Jessica Kozlowski, of 299 Providence St., Rehoboth, failed a field sobriety test at the scene and registered a blood alcohol reading more than twice the legal limit after a breath test, police said.

The crash happened at around 1:38 a.m. when Kozlowski crashed into one of two East Providence cruisers stopped in the first and second travel lanes providing emergency lights to the state police who were investigating an earlier two-car crash.

The cruisers were stopped near Exit 7 and the officer who was struck was transported to Miriam Hospital and later released.

He was wearing a seat belt.

Kozlowski "displayed signs of impairment" before failing the sobriety test and was held overnight for arraignment on Friday in Sixth Division District Court in Providence, said Capt. John M. Allen of the state police.

All told, Kozlowski is being charged with driving under the influence, first offense, and driving under the influence resulting in serious injury.

The passengers in Kozlowski's car were not hurt and declined medical treatment at the scene.
