In the process ., police said they had to resort to physical force to gain control of the situation.  At least two individuals and a police officer were treated for injuries at the Newport Hospital, including an 18 year-old Newport man who was tased twice by officers.

When officers arrived on-scene, 18 year-old Trey Quinn of Newport allegedly tried to walk through the front door and reportedly cursed at an officer when he was told to remain inside.  Police reported Quinn swayed from side to side as he walked, his eyes were extremely bloodshot and his breath smelled of alcohol.

Quinn reportedly asked if his younger brother was outside; and when officers asked for his brother’s name, Quinn swore at officers again, said police.   Police said when they attempted to guide him outside, Quinn spun towards the officer with a clenched fist.

Police said as an officer attempted to handcuff Quinn, a scuffle broke out with another officer and party-goer.  Quinn then pulled away and tried to jump over the fence, said police

According to the police report, the officer tackled Quinn and he fell into a patio furniture set.  Police said once Quinn got to his feet, he attempted to tackle the officer. Police reported despite multiple warnings, Quinn continued to fight and kick his legs.

Police said to control Quinn, he was shot with a taser in his right bicep.  Despite the stun, Quinn continued to kick and resist arrest, reported police. Police delivered a second stun to Quinn’s right leg, which enabled police to handcuff and arrest Quinn.

Also arrested was 21 year-old Benjamin Brigham of Portsmouth.  Police reported Brigham pushed an officer in the chest and attempted to run away.  An officer grabbed him by his waist and took him to the ground, where he was handcuffed and arrested, said police.

After they gained control of the crowd, police said they kicked a door open, which struck Kaylin Maddox in her face which caused her head to bleed.

In the cruiser Quinn complained of wrist pain, head pain and pain from the taser probes, said police.  Quinn, Maddox and the officer were treated at the Newport Hospital for injuries.

At the hospital, Quinn allegedly said he thought his cousin was in trouble and was being assaulted so he “blacked out” in a fit of anger and began to fight with the officer, said police.

What's your take? Do you feel this was an appropriate use of tasers and force?  Is physical force unavoidable or should it be reserved only dangerous criminals?
