Police Charge Woman with DUI, Daughter in Car

The following arrest was reported by the Middletown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

On Friday, Jan. 18, police arrested Candace Jenkins, 40, of 10 Elliott Place, Newport on a first offense driving under the influence charge. Police said her 8 year-old daughter was in the car.

According to the police report, an employee from the Potter League Animal Shelter reported that an intoxicated woman with a young girl drove out of the parking lot. Police spotted a suspect vehicle on Oliphant Lane that was swerving across the road.  Jenkins drove into the driveway of 223 Oliphant Lane, over the grass, then back onto the driveway and stopped, said police.

When Jenkins exited the car, she allegedly said “I’m drunk."   Police said she smelled strongly of alcohol and stumbled while standing outside of the car. During the field sobriety tests, Jenkins allegedly lost her balance and was caught by an officer.

Jenkins was also cited with a laned roadway violation and refusal to submit to a chemical test.
