RI Shelters To Open In Storm: Latest List

Here is the latest list of shelters, if people need a place to go overnight.

CRANSTON, RI — The state emergency management agency on Wednesday urged all cities and towns to open a shelter, due to the coming storm followed by extreme low temperatures. These shelters are for overnight stays and are separate from the list of warming centers, which typically are open only daytimes and during regular business hours. Patch is checking municipal government websites for information about the shelters. (In an emergency, people can always go to the police station for help.)

Patch will update the list.

Barrington: According to the Town website, East Providence High School serves as the Barrington shelter, if the storm event is statewide. Otherwise, the shelter is the Primrose Hill Elementary School. Announcements will be made in local media and on the website. In addition, residents can always go to the lobby of the Public Safety Building, 100 Federal Road. It has a generator and is always available for warming. Also, the library, 281 County Road, is used as a warming shelter during their normal hours.

Coventry: The Town will wait to open its shelter, police said. "Warming Center/Shelters - We are prepared to open our warming center at the Dept. of Humans Service at 50 Wood Street should the need arise. We encourage all residents to stay in during the storm and we will assess any outages and the need for warming shelters during and after the storm. If it is a life threatening emergency during the storm please call either police of fire to report your situation. We will attempt to assist residents seeking shelter utilizing our Fire Departments or the Police Department as temporary shelters.
