Veterans Group Present Wounded Soldier Check

A veterans group based out of Coventry presented a Middletown soldier a check this week after a motorcycle fundraiser

This Fourth of July a group of veterans were able to give a young Middletown veteran a token of the community's appreciation.

After a motorcycle fundraiser last month, Veterans Helping Veterans, a group based out of out of the Coventry VFW Post 9404, presented Retired Sergeant Michael Verardo a check for $12,000.

On April 24, 2010, while deployed in Afghanistan, Verardo was injured from an improvised explosive device that ripped off his lower left leg, part of his left arm and severely burned his body.

“Most important is that [he] s now a brother in arms with Veterans Helping Veterans,” said Humbert DeGregory from VHV. “He is a special person in our hearts.” DeGregory added Sergeant Verardo’s soon-to-be-bride Sarah Conklin was also an inspiration to the group.

“There is no medicine like the love of another person.  Sergeant [Verardo] has that person,” he said.
