4 URI Students Charged With Possession, Fraud

Four URI students face either felony drug or fraud charges, following a search of their dorm on Wednesday.

According to a press release issued by the South Kingstown Police Department on Thursday morning, four University of Rhode Island students were arrested on Wednesday for various drug and fraud charges.

Police listed the four as:

  • Kyle Evans, 20, of 84 Lubec St., Providence, charged with one felony count of possession of OxyContin, and misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana and possession of alcohol by a minor.
  • Edwin Leonardo, 21, of 14 Lynn St., Providence, charged with one felony count of possession of MDMA.
  • Gilbran Gonzales, 20, of 701 Manton Ave., Providence, charged with two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and one count of possession of marijuana.
  • Opeyemi Onipede, 19, of 35 Stansbury St., Providence, charged with one count of fraudulent use of a credit card.

According to Det. Sgt. Alfred Bucco, who prepared the release, more charges are expected to be filed at a future date. Police said the arrests were made after a search warrant was executed for 15 Upper College Road.

Leonardo, Gonzales and Onipede are all connected with a media brand, RoundTableRT. Gonzales and Onipede are listed on the staff page as of Thursday afternoon, and Leonardo helped promote their events and radio show via his Twitter.

Screening hearings are scheduled for Onipede, Leonardo and Evans on April 16 and April 19. Court information for Gonzales is not yet on the Rhode Island Judicial Database.
