Rhode Islanders Have New Hotline To Report Beached Sharks

NOAA has provided the hotline for reporting sharks

Rhode Islanders now have a number to call when they spot a shark that has washed ashore.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration provided a hotline for reporting beached sharks in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

"Sharks in our region are more likely to wash ashore during winter," NOAA posted to its Facebook page.

"If you see a shark, please take a few photos and report the shark by calling the new hotline number: 401-859-1043," the post said.

NOAA advised that when reporting, include the date and time, location, species (if known), approximate length, condition (alive, freshly dead with little decay, dead with some decay, dead very decayed), your name and contact information for follow-up.

"Scientists from our Science Center’s Apex Predators Program collect important data and biological samples from reported sharks that help us better understand shark biology and ecology," the post said.
