5 Narragansett-South Kingstown Nonprofits To Support This Holiday Season
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups.
NARRAGANSETT-SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — If you’re like many of your Narragansett and South Kingstown neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.
Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Narragansett-South Kingstown area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
1. Jonnycake Center For Hope: The Jonny Cake Center for Hope's mission is "to provide basic needs, resources, and hope to our community members."

The center runs the donation-based Jonnycake Market, which helps households put food on the table when they are struggling to make ends meet. Members are invited to shop at the market twice a month, or more often if necessary, and bring home a week’s worth of food for their family.
2. South Kingstown Animal Shelter: The South Kingstown Animal Shelter is town-run and was founded in 1980. It accepts neglected, abandoned, and/or stray dogs, cats, and other domestic animals from South Kingstown and Narragansett.
3. South Kingstown's two volunteer fire departments: Both of South Kingstown's fire departments are volunteer-based.
The Kingston Fire District provides help for the University of Rhode Island and the village of Kingston. The Union Fire District provides emergency services for the majority of South Kingstown.
4. Ocean Recovery Community Alliance (ORCA): The Ocean Recovery Community Alliance is a group of volunteers passionate about keeping Rhode Island beaches and rivers clean.
The group has organized numerous beach clean up events in Narragansett, South Kingstown, North Kingstown, Providence, and more.
5. South County Museum: The South County Museum cares for and displays over 20,000 unique objects that encourage exploring Rhode Island's rich and diverse history.
Its mission is to interpret southern Rhode Island's agricultural, marine, textile manufacturing, and resort histories.
