Narragansett Police Log: July 19, 2012

A traffic stop leads to a drunken driving arrest, and a Narragansett man takes a smoke because he knows he's going to get arrested.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drunken Driving, Warrant Arrests

Police said a traffic stop at about 1 a.m. on July 19 led to the arrest of two men.

  • George J. Carolan, 21, of 1096 Taunton Ave., Seekonk, MA, was charged with drunken driving.
  • Travis Bisson, 20, of 229 Grand Marsh Bay Road, Prospect Harbor, ME, was also arrested. Police said a Sixth Division District Court warrant was out for Bisson’s arrest for a January 2011 Pawtucket police charge of possession of marijuana.

According to police, an officer saw a gray Chevy Camaro drifting on Point Judith Road near Westlake’s Garage. A traffic stop was made in the 300-section of Point Judith Road, with police noting that the car’s tires went up on the curb in the process.

Police said that during the stop, the driver – Carolan – smelled of alcohol and said he had had a couple of beers while at the Fisherman’s Memorial Campground.

According to police, a background check of a passenger in the car – Bisson – revealed the warrant for his arrest. Police said he was arrested without incident.

Police said Carolan submitted to field sobriety tests, which he allegedly failed. He was arrested and transported to headquarters as a result.

According to police, Carolan consented to chemical breath tests at headquarters at about 2:20 a.m., which revealed his blood alcohol content to be .166 and .163.

Carolan and Bisson were transported to Fourth Division District Court for processing at about 9 a.m.

Narragansett Man Charged with Domestic Offenses

David Joseph Cheatham, 22, of 1084 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett, was arrested at about 7:18 p.m. on July 19 and charged with domestic vandalism and domestic disorderly conduct.

According to police, they responded to a caller who said that Cheatham had tried to force his way into her bedroom. The caller told police that Cheatham had kicked the door and cracked it in two places, and then fled the scene when she threatened to call police.

Police said that they found Cheatham in the woods near the home with the victim.

According to police, Cheatham told them that the damage to the door was pre-existing, and that he had the victim had had a fight over money. Cheatham told police that the fight had started when he tried to remove an air conditioning unit from the victim’s room, at which point he placed his hands on her.

When police asked Cheatham why he had left the scene, he allegedly told them, “I wanted to smoke a cigarette before I got arrested.”

Cheatham was arrested, transported to police headquarters, processed and then released at about 9:45 p.m.
