Narragansett Police Log: June 22 and 23, 2012

An allegedly drunk driver insists that he knows his rights, even if he's smashed.

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the Narragansett Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Allegedly Drunk Providence Man Definitely Knows His Rights, Man

Johan Manuel Castillo, 31, of 24 Hilarity St., Providence, was arrested at about 1:35 a.m. on June 23 and charged with drunken driving. He was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

According to police, while monitoring the nightly close of the Coast Guard House, they observed a white Oldsmobile driven by Castillo backing up and almost hitting a group of pedestrians. As a result, police spoke to Castillo.

Police said that Castillo smelled of alcohol and slurred while speaking to officers. Police noted that he dropped his license on the floor three times before successfully handing it to an officer.

According to police, Castillo consented to field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was arrested at this point.

Police said that during booking, Castillo told them, “Just because I’m smashed you think I don’t know my rights? I know my rights man.”

Richmond Woman Charged With Drunken Driving

Jamie M. Buscher, 20, of 3 Miranda Drive, Richmond, was arrested at about 2:01 a.m. on June 23 and charged with drunken driving.

According to police, an officer monitoring traffic from St. Mary’s Church on Point Judith Road clocked a silver Volvo sedan at 45 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone. Police also noted that the car was drifting back and forth, and a traffic stop was made near Bill Sweet Drive.

Police said that as the car pulled into the breakdown lane, it struck a curb, and remained on the curb as the car was parked. Police said Buscher smelled of alcohol, and noted that when asked for her license, she handed the officer a credit card instead.

According to police, Buscher submitted to field sobriety tests, which she failed. Police also noted that Buscher took a breath test and blew a .209, at which point she was arrested.

Police said that Buscher consented to additional chemical tests at police headquarters about an hour after her initial arrest, and her blood alcohol content tested at .154 and .149.

Police said that when they attempted to take her photo, she told them, “You are not taking my picture, I’m not okay with that.” Police said that after additional explanation, Buscher consented to a photo.

Police noted that Buscher requested a medical evaluation at about 5:15 a.m., at which point he was transferred to South County Hospital for treatment. Police said she was transported back to headquarters at 5:52 a.m., processed by a justice of the peace and released shortly after 6 a.m.

Traffic Accident Victim Cited for Suspended License

Police said a three-car accident at about 5:08 p.m. on June 23 led to the citation of a South Kingstown woman for driving with a suspended license.

According to police, they received a report of an accident at the intersection of Foddering Farm Road and Point Judith Road.

An independent witness said that a car failed to stop in time while approaching the light, hitting the back of a car, which then hit the back of the first car stopped at the light.

Police said there were three women in the second car, and they were transported to South County Hospital for minor injuries. The occupants in the other cars did not require transport.

However, police said that the driver of the second car – Theresa M. Corriveau, 20, of 938 Tuckertown Road – had a suspended license. Police said she was issued a citation at the hospital for the violation.

Party Leads to Two Alcohol Citations

According to police, the break-up of a party shortly after 12:30 a.m. on June 23 led to several citations.

  • Colin V. Tennett, 18, of 72 Shirley Boulevard, Cranston, was cited and charged with possession of alcohol by a minor.
  • Haley L. Doster, 21, of 59 Hawthorne Ave., Cranston, was cited and charged with violating the town’s social host ordinance.

Police said while clearing out a loud party at 15 Prospect Avenue, Tennett attempted to leave with a cup of wine. A background check revealed he was only 18, and he was cited for possession. As a result, the party’s host – Doster – was also cited.

Cranston Woman Cited for Expired License

Melissa A. Gierszon, 43, of 575 Dyer Ave., Cranston, was cited at about 12:23 a.m. on June 23 and charged with driving with an expired license.

According to police, an officer traveling behind a blue Ford Crown Victoria on Burnside Avenue saw the drier – Gierszon – flick a cigarette out the window. A traffic stop was made near Charlestown Boulevard.

Police said a background check revealed that Gierszon’s license was expired. She was cited for the license violation, and warned for the littering.

According to police, a passenger in the car also had a suspended license. As a result, the car was towed from the scene.

No Arrests on June 22

According to police logs, no arrests were made on June 22.
