Point Judith Fishing Boat Grounded Briefly in Woods Hole Pass

The 67-foot F/V Hope & Sydney was carrying 2,500 pounds of squid when it got stuck for a few hours on Monday but eventually broke free.

POINT JUDITH, RI—A fishing boat homeported in Point Judith ran aground off Woods Hole, MA on Monday but was able to break free when the tide came in, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Hope & Sydney was carrying 2,500 gallons of calamari and 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel when it ran aground, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

The Coast Guard got the call at around 11:45 a.m. on a VHF-FM channel reporting that the boat, a 67-foot stern trawler, was hard aground in Woods Hole Pass.

A 45-foot Coast Guard rescue boat from Woods Hole was launched and the Buzzards Bay Marine Task Force was activated.

In the end, responding crews stood by as the boat waited for the tide to come in and when it did, the boat was freed and able to power away on its own at 3:45 p.m.

All the crew members were safe and unharmed. No signs of fuel were seen in the water.

"We are pleased that the fishermen reached out to us for help and we were standing by to assist,” said Operations Specialist First Class Michelle Crocker from Sector Southeastern New England's Command Center, “A good day is when we are ultimately not needed, and the crew can transit home with their catch under their own power.”
