Rhode Island Reaches 3,000 Deaths From COVID-19
Gov. Dan McKee ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff, and the State House will be lit in blue and gold.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island reached another somber pandemic milestone Tuesday, reaching 3,000 totals deaths from COVID-19.
The state passed the 3,000-mark amid another pandemic surge, just days before the Christmas holiday. Gov. Dan McKee called it "heartbreaking."
"We’ve lost 3,000 mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, grandparents, friends, and neighbors who will be missed — especially during this holiday season," McKee said in a statement. "In our small, tight-knit community of Rhode Islanders, this is a moment that we will not forget and one that we hope will be a call to action to save countless more lives as we continue through this pandemic."

McKee renewed his call for Rhode Islanders to get vaccinated if they have not yet done so, and to get a booster if they are eligible.
"The time is now. And in this fight, every second counts. Don’t take an unnecessary risk — get vaccinated, get boosted, and wear a mask inside public places," McKee continued. "Let us remember those who have left us, pray for their families, and reflect on what we can do to help protect someone else. It is the most selfless act that you can do this holiday season."

To honor the 3,000 lives lost, McKee directed that flags in the state be lowered to half-staff until Wednesday evening. In addition, the State House will be lit blue and gold Tuesday night, in memorial.
Rhode Island reached 1,000 COVID-19 deaths in July 2020.
