RI Weather: Air Quality Alert For Tuesday

For the second day in a row, an air quality alert is being issued for the entire state, the Department of Environmental Management said.

NARRAGANSETT, RI — For the second day in a row, an air quality alert is being issued for the entire state, the Department of Environmental Management said. The reason is due to a "warm and polluted air mass," which isn't moving off. The sun and the southwest winds will allow the ozone levels to crank up into the unhealthy zone. Relief might come by Thursday.

"The Department of Health warns that unhealthy levels of ozone can cause throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, increased susceptibility to respiratory infection and aggravation of asthma and other respiratory ailments," state officials said. "These symptoms are worsened by exercise and heavy activity." Children, the elderly and people with lung problems, such as asthma, are particularly at risk.
