Police said that Bernasconi provided them with a bill of sale for the car from July 21. They also noted that while processing her information, she opened her car door, which revealed the presence of a pill grinder.

According to police, they asked Bernasconi permission to search her car, which she granted. Police also performed a pat-down on Bernasconi, which revealed a large, unmarked pill bottle in her bra. The bottle had 12 Endocets, a name brand for Oxycodone.

Police noted that a search of the car revealed three more pills, plus a white powder in a hollowed-out pen tube in Bernasconi’s wallet.

Based on their findings, police arrested Bernasconi without incident. A passenger in the car was transported to Charlestown.

During processing, Bernasconi told police that she had a prescription for the pills, but she couldn’t provide it to them. She also told police that she snorted them because she had difficulty swallowing pills.

Police said that Bernasconi changed the story about where she was going that night several times, and at one point told them she was a nurse. She also asked police to keep her name out of the paper, because she is a visiting nurse and was afraid of losing her job.

According to police, a background check did reveal that Bernasconi had an active nursing license for Rhode Island. She was arraigned before a justice of the peace at about 7:30 p.m. and released.
