Sports: Mistowski’s Wild Weekend; Boys’ Track, Prout Hockey

Mistowski Finishes 18^th in Nation in Weight Throw

While the rest of her team was still , Narragansett sophomore and starting power forward Leia Mistowski was getting ready to board a train at Kingston Station for New York City.

That’s because this year, Mistowski continued , the weight throw. Under RIIL rules, any high school athlete is allowed to compete in one addition event in track and field meets.

At the New Balance Indoor Nationals, the Narragansett sophomore finished 18^th, up from her seeding spot of 30, with a throw of 43 feet, 9 inches. Mistowski said it was a personal best for her.

It capped off a wild two-day stretch for Mistowski. On Saturday morning, she arrived at Narragansett High School to find none of her teammates there, and no bus either. She said that they had left, not realizing she wasn’t on the bus, before turning around when she gave them a call.

“[Freshman] Carly Timpson said, ‘It’s a good thing we went back and got you,’” Mistowski said, laughing.

In the title game, Mistowski once again played rugged defense in the post, grabbed more than 10 rebounds and had some questionable clear-outs in the low post. As opposed to previous games, she actually did get called for one illegal screen.

“I tell them, ‘Guys I’m going to clear them out,’” she said, adding that the title game was the only time she was whistled for it during the season. “My mindset is to box out and to get the ball to an outlet. Plus, the weak side [on offensive rebounds] is always open.”

Mistowski said the championship run caught her and her mom by surprise, and she was glad she could fit basketball and track into the weekend.

“It’s amazing, and it’s overwhelming,” she said. “We tried so hard throughout the season to win the title.”

Four Boys Also Compete at Indoors

Also competing at the New Balance Indoor Invitational was the Narragansett boys’ indoor track 4-by-400 team, posting a time of 3:30.37.

Prout Hockey Still Alive

One of the few local teams still alive in the playoffs, following the conclusion of the basketball, track and wrestling seasons, is Prout boys’ hockey.

The Crusaders play Portsmouth 7 p.m. tonight at the Boss Ice Arena in Kingston. It is the rubber match for the two teams, as Prout won the first 9-5, and lost the second 3-2 in overtime at Portsmouth Abbey.

Prout finished the regular season 13-4-2 overall, and 12-4-2 in Division II-South, tops in their division. If the Crusaders win, they advance to the Division II finals against Coventry. The first game is 6 p.m. Thursday at Providence College’s Schneider Arena.
