Tipped Tractor Trailer Ties Up Traffic

Police said the driver suffered minor injuries after his tractor trailer tipped over while turning on the Dillon Rotary.

NARRAGANSETT -- According to Narragansett police, a load in a tractor trailer shifted while turning around the Dillon Rotary at about 8:07 p.m. Wednesday, causing it to tip on its side and crash.

Police said the driver suffered a minor shoulder injury, but the crash resulted in no serious injuries.

As of 10:30 p.m., the tractor was still in the roadway, although it had been pulled back to an upright position. Northup’s Towing was working to tow the truck back to town docks.

However, at about 10:40 p.m., the tractor trailer started back up, despite the crash. It was escorted by several other vehicles back to town docks.

Following the crash, traffic was diverted from the rotary and instead toward Point Judith Road, Woodruff Avenue and Kingstown Road.

Despite the Chiquita decals on the truck, police said the cargo was fish from town docks. The cargo will be checked by state police and health inspectors for damage before being allowed delivery.

Police said that according to the driver, the load in the trailer shifted as he was trying to turn around the rotary. The driver said he tried to correct at the portion of the curve near the walk-in, but he couldn’t regain control, and the truck flipped on to its side.

In the process, the windshield of the truck was destroyed, and there was damage to one side of the trailer. Police said injuries to the driver were minor, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
