WRESTLING: Gallagher Takes Tourney’s 160 Title

The sophomore runs his record up to 36-1 with three more wins at the 2012 Smithfield Tournament.

Narragansett sophomore Michael Gallagher took the 160-pound weight division Saturday at the 2012 Smithfield Tournament, the top finish for the Mariners.

According to TrackWrestling, Gallagher is now 36-1 on the year. He beat Johnston’s Joe Pecchia by a 5-4 decision in the finals, his third match of the day.

At 195 pounds, Greg Hamilton took second place, and Alex Millen finished in third at 220.

Also competing for the Mariners were Seamus Mathieu (113), Austin Ranney (120), Rob Peterson (126), Matt McGreen (132), Reed Nelson (138), Daniel Stern-Lonczak (145), Jim Cook (152) and Mitchell Kennedy (170).

The Mariners only wrestled at 11 of the 14 weight divisions, and finished eighth of 17 teams. The full team (10-7, 10-4 Division II-South) is in action Thursday, hosting Moses Brown (6-6, 6-6 Division II-North) and Toll Gate (11-3-1, 11-2 Division II-South) at 5 p.m. The Mariners are expected to wrestle at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday, the state junior varsity and freshman tournament is being held at Coventry High School. Expected to compete from Narragansett are John Cook, Christian Moroski, Alex Millen and Sam Kershaw.
