Juan J. Lins-Morstadt, Army Lt. Colonel, retired, 86, passed away December 23, 2015 at South County Hospital.

Juan J. Lins-Morstadt, Army Lt. Colonel, retired, 86, passed away December 23, 2015 at South County Hospital. He was the son of the late Otto Lins-Morstadt of Asuncion, Paraguay, SA and the late Charlotte (Recke) Lins-Morstadt of Munich, Germany. The husband of Carol (Fullerton) Lins-Morstadt, he is survived by son John Charles Lins-Morstadt of Marysville, Washington, son Carl Kenneth Lins-Morstadt of Lyme, Connecticut, and daughter Joan Charlotte Lins-Morstadt of North Kingstown, and grandson Leonardo Cortes of North Kingstown, and deceased grandson Avery John Lins-Morstadt of Marysville Washington.
Born a Paraguayan citizen in Berlin, Germany, he came to the United States after enlisting in the Army in 1951. He was commissioned in Artillery in 1955 and became a US citizen in 1956, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1973. He saw combat in the Korean and Vietnam wars and was awarded, among others, the Meritorious Service Medal as a Battalion Commander and the Bronze Star.
With a bachelor’s degree in history in 1970, he attended the Rhode Island School of Design after retiring and earned a degree in Fine Arts in painting in 1977. A third generation visual artist, he became an award-winning landscape painter. Later he became interested in genealogy and researched and wrote on his and his wife’s family.
Lins-Morstadt served as president of the Rhode Island Solar Energy Association, and held numerous memberships, among others, in the Copley Society of Boston earning the title “Copley Artist”, and the Providence Art Club. He served as president of the Wickford Art Association and exhibited his work in the Rhode Island and Massachusetts area and in Germany where it is in various collections.
The calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 27th at Cranston-Murphy Funeral Home in North Kingstown from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the afternoon. Burial will be with military honors on Monday, December 28th, at 12:15 p.m. in the Veterans Cemetery in Exeter. Please meet at the Administration Center on the right.
