Retired Judge Seeking Info On Naked 'Fat Test' Allegations In North Kingstown

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — A retired judge hired to investigate allegations North Kingston High School's former basketball coach forced students to strip naked behind closed doors is asking community members to come forward with new information.

The North Kingstown Town Council hired retired Superior Court Judge Susan McGuirl to investigate former coach Aaron Thomas. Former students say former Thomas asked students to strip naked in his office for so-called "fat tests," and say he had been doing so since the 1990s.

"As current students and student athletes, you may have a unique perspective on the events and circumstances of the allegations against the former boys’ basketball coach at NKHS," McGuirl said in a letter sent to families. "Any information you may have to share would be especially valuable to my review."

Thomas resigned in June 2021 before facing termination and has denied the allegations. Both Superintendent Phil Auger and Assistant Superintendent Denise Mancieri resigned in March 2022. According to WPRI 12, which first reported this story, Auger kept Thomas on as a coach for more than two years after some students came forward. Auger also denied doing anything wrong, saying he would have acted faster if he knew the extent of the allegations sooner.

No timeline for the investigation review was announced, so it's unclear when it will be completed. The council set a budget of no more than $25,000 for the review.
