Pawtucket Homeless Campers Vacate Tent City
The land along the Seekonk River is owned by the city and slated for development as part of the Tidewater Landing project.

PAWTUCKET, RI — A group of homeless individuals who were camping along the Seekonk River have packed up and left, taking their tents, generators and grills with them.
City government and police told the inhabitants of the informal tent city to leave or risk being charged with trespass, The Providence Journal reports. Outreach workers with the House of Hope have been working with some of the people to help them find shelter or housing.
The land is owned by the city and slated for development as part of the Tidewater Landing project including a soccer stadium, housing, commercial development and a river walk. A spokesman for the city said the land poses environmental hazards due to prior industrial use and that it was cleared in a manner that was safe and collaborative. However, some campers told a reporter that they have nowhere else to go.
