Update: Red Cross Helping Three Families After Sunday Fire
Fire on North Drive destroyed three mobile homes on Sunday, police said.

PORTSMOUTH, RI— Three families lost their homes Sunday after a fire started in a heater at 31 North Drive. According to police, around 10:21 a.m., the resident called the fire department after an unsuccessful attempt to put out the fire himself. He told firefighters he heard noises from the heater and then saw smoke and flames. Crews put out the fire, but the home was deemed a total loss. According to police, two nearby homes were also damaged. The Red Cross is assisting three families, it said.
No one was injured, police said. There was no word about pets.
The fire is still under investigation, police said.
