Fire Raged At Portsmouth Boatyard For Hours: See Photos

Fire crews were called in from nine nearby communities to help extinguish the blaze and cover the Portsmouth fire station.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — Last week's massive fire at a Portsmouth boatyard took approximately five hours to extinguish, according to the fire department. Additional crews were called in from several neighboring communities to help extinguish the blaze.

A fire broke out in a boat at Hinckley Yacht Services around 10:30 a.m. Friday, Portsmouth firefighters said. When crews arrived, the large vessel was engulfed in flames.

Mutual aid was called in from Middletown, Newport, the naval station in Newport, Tiverton, Bristol, Warren, Jamestown and North Kingstown. Little Compton firefighters were brought in to cover the Portsmouth fire station as crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

The Providence canteen was also on site for more than five hours, offering support to crews on scene.
