Portsmouth Could Feel Strong Winds From Latest Storm

Sping might be just around the corner, but winter is packing one final punch this week with another snowstorm.

This time meteorologists predict Portsmouth could see a few inches of snowfall with more significant accumulations coming down in interior Rhode Island. 

Portsmouth, however, could see strong winds and significant rainfall, according to forecasts as of 5 p.m. Wednesday. 

Southern New England will be most impacted by the heavy wet snows expected from the slow-moving coastal storm that will pass through the area beginning Wednesday and lasting through Friday, according to a winter storm watch advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Taunton, MA.

A parking ban is in effect in Portsmouth from 7 a.m. Thursday until noon on Friday. 

NWS officials are warning residents to prepare now for the storm. Due to the wet and heavy nature of snow in areas, travel may become difficult, particularly late Thursday into Friday morning. Strong winds combined with snow accumulations could also result in power outages. Wind gusts could hit 50 mph over the next several days.

"Now is the time to prepare for the storm," states the NWS advisory. "Stay informed of the latest forecasts. Those planning travel should be prepared to modify plans to avoid traveling during the height of the storm."

Ice melt, snow shovels and other storm necessities can all be purchased locally at the new Ace Hardware on East Main Road.
