Portsmouth Man, 20, Dies after Turnpike Avenue Crash

The victim crossed the double yellow line and struck a tree at around 6:38 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

PORTSMOUTH, RI—A 20-year-old Portsmouth man has died after a single-car crash on Turnpike Avenue Tuesday night.

Portsmouth Police Deputy Chief Major Brian Peters said that the victim was driving south on Turnpike Avenue when he crossed the double yellow line and crashed into a tree on the opposite side of the road.

The crash happened at around 6:38 p.m. near Gorton Street, police said.

The driver was transported to St. Anne’s Hospital by members of the Portsmouth Fire Department where he was pronounced dead.

The accident is under investigation by the department’s accident reconstruction unit. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
