Portsmouth Temporarily Bans Outdoor Burning

Dry conditions have firefighters concerned about difficult-to control brush fires sparked by recreational and open burns.

PORTSMOUTH, RI—Recreational and brush burning is now temporarily banned in Portsmouth due to extremely dry conditions.

The risk of fast-spreading brush fires is high due to the dryness and firefighters are concerned that an open burn might spread, threatening lives and property.

The Fire Department announced the temporary ban on Friday and along with the ban, officials offered their apologies for the timing. Many July 4 festivities that include a bonfire will have to go without.

"Traditional July 4th bonfires will not be allowed at this time," the department said in a post on its Facebook page. "Should conditions improve, the department will lift this restriction."
