Here are the top stories in Providence today:

  1. A Providence neighborhood was asked to shelter in place Wednesday afternoon as police negotiated with an armed man barricaded inside a house. The Providence Police Department asked people around Ledge Street near Charles Street to stay in place during the standoff.
The man, who had guns inside, was arrested later in the day. He was identified as Elliot Britto, 31, and he was taken into custody without incident. (NECN)
  2. The Providence Public Library has unveiled a five-week virtual course, available for college credit, on helping people moderate conversations about race. With course materials designed by Amrita Patel and Denise LaForce, “How to Talk About Race” will teach participants how to use an Identity Wheel, explore bias and micro-aggressions, understand systemic racism, concepts about “lived experiences” and how to frame conversations. The overall goal will be to help bring up discussions about race and help establish rules for a positive discussion. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
  3. Providence Children’s Museum has announced the return of their “Noon Years Eve” New Year Celebration this Dec. 31 at its location on South Street. Guests can enjoy activities like dancing, playing with instruments, and a parade. A formal ball drop is also scheduled in the children’s garden to accommodate the bedtimes of the smallest Rhode Islanders. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
