Here are the top three stories in Providence today:
- 42 Rhode Island arts and cultural groups are sharing nearly $3.5 million from the state government for renovation, repairs, and program expansion projects. Among the grant recipients is Teatros ECAS, the state's only Spanish-language theatre. The theatre will use the nearly $200,000 it's received to renovate a new performance space in Providence's Valley Arts District. (The Wilton Bulletin)
- Providence police are currently investigating the city's first homicide of 2022. On Sunday morning just before 3:00 a.m., two men were shot at the intersection of Elmwood and Potters Avenues. One man was pronounced dead, with the other man in surgery as of Sunday morning. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
- On Friday night, the Providence city council canceled a planned vote on an ordinance that would block Mayor Jorge Elorza’s vaccine mandate. Providence City Council President John Igliozzi pledged to block the mayor from the mass firing of up to 80 Providence PD officers who were not vaccinated by the Friday deadline. Instead of holding the voting as planned that evening, Igliozzi requested that the proposal be sent to the Finance Committee for consideration. (WPRI.com)
